Outfitting your best gals in attire that is flattering, what you envision and won’t break the bank can be challenging, right? Oh sweet bride, I know exactly what you are thinking – is it even possible to make everyone happy? Take heart, the answer is yes. Today, I am sharing a few of my top tips to consider when you begin the process. In a later post, we will also talk about how to select dresses when your ladies are spread out. But, let’s take things one step at a time, shall we?
Consider length – When selecting your bridal party attire, seasonal temperatures and venue can be great indicators for what length you should choose. If you are having a black tie affair or are getting married in chilly months, a full length skirt might be best. Whereas, if you are having an outdoor summer soiree, your girls will appreciate a shorter hemline.
Style and fabric – Along the lines of the length, you have so many options when it comes to style and fabric. However, the overall aesthetic of your day can assist you here. Do you prefer the romance of a chiffon or glamor of a beaded or satin dress? Perhaps you really enjoy a skirt and top combination or mismatched look. There is no correct answer, but it is key to think about these things when looking for attire.
Your gown – I always recommend that you have your gown selected first. You are, after all, the star of the day and you should feel your absolute best. Please do not select your gown based off of your bridal party! Once you choose your wedding gown, the ladies’ attire should compliment yours. They do not have to be the same shape, fabric or even look at all alike. However, I would recommend that they have the same adjectives, like romantic, fun, ethereal, classic or a slew of others.
Color – Again, complimentary to your gown and in line with your color palette, of course. Also consider skin tone. Darlings, yellow is a hard color to wear, especially if you are fair. Perhaps you might want to use your flowers for the big pop of color in the look, or a statement necklace. However, if you do choose to have a wow color, be sure that your ladies will be complimented by that choice. While your vision is very important, you want to ensure that they also love what you choose for them and feel confident.
Budget and wearability – Some ladies have occasion to wear a formal gown again (lucky them!), but many of your maids will not. So, let’s graciously consider the practicality and post-wedding wearability of the dress you choose. Consider a full length gown that can be shortened to a dress for everyday wear. Or, if you have your heart set on something specific, you might offer for your party to borrow from places like Rent the Runway or Vow to Be Chic, who carry designer gowns at a fraction of the cost of purchase. Another wonderful way to ensure all parties are comfortable and happy with the purchase is to choose a fabric, color and designer, then allow the ladies to choose the style they love most. This way, you will have a cohesive look, even if the gowns are different.
No matter what you choose, the key is that your closest girlfriends are there to support you. With that in mind, I encourage you to look at dress selection as another opportunity to show your gratitude and consider them in your choices. Approach the process with an open mind and enjoy the time with your best girls!
What are some things that, as a bridesmaid, you have appreciated or wish the bride had considered? Or as a bride, you made sure to do for your ladies? Happy shopping!
xoxo, Jenn
